What is Wellness?
My friend Sharon Farnsworth said the following: "Let us learn about the Chinese for a moment. The American (or Western) way of medicine is very different from the Chinese (or Eastern) way. We are programmed to think in bits and pieces, to think of treating symptoms of disease with isolated drugs. The Chinese do not focus on disease but instead focus on wellness. Their doctors were paid to keep them well. If the patient became sick, the doctor had to pay the patient! If the patient died, a special lantern was hung on the doctor's house and he might find himself short of paying customers. Eastern tradition has long thought of the body and its symptoms as a whole. Chinese doctors were the cooks who prepared food to keep people well. The ancient herbalists taught that the proper foods balanced and nourished the back to health. And of course, that is the message we are sharing today. Is it not this what we all want -- wellness instead of illness? Do we enjoy illness? What does illness cost us in the way we feel and in our ability to do things? How can we serve others if we are ill? Of course, we all want to be well, is not that right? Look at the millions spent each year in search of wellness. Are we as a nation making any headway? I wonder if there is something we can learn from Chinese? If I told you that I know of some Chinese Herbal Foods that might help us attain a higher level of wellness would you be interested to know about them?"
